Despite a record number of inspections, the number of workplace deaths in Nova Scotia increased last year according to numbers released by the province.
From April 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013, 10 workers lost their lives as a result of traumatic injuries, up six from the prior year.
The provincial government report stated there were also 22 workplace fatalities caused by a long-term injury or illness, an increase of one for the same period the previous year.
Labour Minister Kelly Regan says the number of workplace deaths is too high.
During the reporting period the province conducted nearly 2,500 workplace inspections, a record number.
To further efforts to limit workplace death and injury Provincial leaders have announced plans to increase the number of inspectors and add to its prosecution team on workplace safety.
